The lessons of Robert Plant

I saw Robert Plant and his Band of Joy this past weekend in New York City, and I have to say that I was floored by his performance.. Outside of my homeboy, Bruce, this was one of the best shows I've ever seen.

To be honest, I wasn't expecting much from RP. I went to the show to see Buddy Miller, one of my favorite artists and the musical anchor of the Band of Joy--as well as Patti Griffith and Darrel Scott. The Band of Joy is an Americana supergroup; for me, RP himself would be the least interesting part of the show.

Wrong. :freak: The folk/country stuff, the Led Zepp stuff, it was all magnificent, and I now believe that RP is a truly amazing performer. Do not miss this act if you have the chance.

The point of all this is to express what I learned from RP this weekend. He doesn't move around very much, so it's not about energy; his voice isn't as powerful as it used to be, so it's not about vocal chops. What made him great was the zen-like calm with which he performed. I have never seen a performer so relaxed, so comfortable in his own skin. So richly himself, a rock star as simply the singer for a great band, without a trace of rock star swagger. Actually, I did see one artist who had this quality, and only one: Frank Sinatra (a Jersey boy, btw). Ol' Blue Eyes didn't overwhelm you with his voice or rock you with his energy. He blew you away with his naturalness.

So today's lesson: cultivate relaxation, self-possession in performing. To my mind, this is far more imporant than how hard you rock, how big your range, etc. It is in fact, I'm now convinced, the very source of charisma. If you're comfortable in your own skin, people will be drawn to you.

Catch RP and the BoJ if you can....You'll see!

Not really big news, but it's always hard to remember when you need to keep it in mind the most...

so, a big thanks to you for imprinting useful data in my memory!

Oh, and, did Plant have a beard or has he shaved (as well he damn should!) ?
