Members DukeOfBoom
How the hell do I do it? I hit the G4 no problem. G#4 doesn't so great, but passable. Then no matter what, my voice will crack at the A4 and I go into falsetto/head. I've done ascending 5 note scales and triads for awhile, but NOTHING gives me a solid A4 belt. Suggestions? Members staticsound
A4's about as high as I can go in belt. The only way I can hit it is a lot of downwards support from the lower abs...like really lock down. If the support isn't there, I end up flipping into head. The more I practiced this, the easier it got though...that, and just visualizing placing the note a little higher...the note is still belted from my upper chest, but it feels like I'm getting more overtones from my nasal cavity...pheryngal whatever it's called, lol
Members DukeOfBoom
How did Kurt Cobain do the Bb4 scream in the chorus of Teen Spirit? That sounds like a belt to u, yes?
Members staticsound
Yeah, Staley does it too in MIB...his technique was better, IMO. I think Cobain just screamed his guts out...maybe the heroin numbed the pain? There's a technique to it though. AIC's new guy nails the Bb4 and it sounds way deeper than Laynes. I've got a Skype session with Lunte coming up in 2 weeks, and that's one of the things were gonna go over. I will share, once I find out the secret to chesty belt tones
Members DukeOfBoom
ROger Kain calls what u described as "Constipating the note" this is an instruction i used to get from my first singing teacher, the late emelie hooke, a great operatic diva in her day. Basically, it means that wh you're going flat-out on a big rock number, you're already using everything you've got and there's an eve bigger note coming up, you need to push out through your butt - to be crude, pushing for a fart. PJ Proby was notorious for splitting his trousers on stage, but his technique was right. that's how you get high notes.
Members staticsound
Oh, back to the A4 belt. Try practicing it with an A3-A4 siren this is an instruction i used to get from my first singing teacher, the late emelie hooke, a great operatic diva in her day. Yeah, that's basically the mechanics of it...Jamie Vendera calls it a "power push"....basically the same feeling when your taking a {censored}, minus the grunting! Members DukeOfBoom
it sounds good but it seems more mix to me than pulling chest to do that belt? It's hard for me to tell if it is indeed a belt and that your belt just isn't naturally "bellowy," or if it's mix. When I think of belt at the A4, I think of Jim Morrison on roadhouse blues, or Glenn Danzig on Angel{censored} (0:38 at )
Members grace_slick
When I have to try and sing a note in a different way from the last one (cause of register changings or just a note that's more difficult than the previous one), I find it's easier if I don't have to sing the 2 note seemlessly, you know? If you sing the G#4, and then sort of pause, breathe and ARM yourself...and just GO FOR IT, it's easier than singing up to it in one go...your voice tends to be in a not ideal position. Sorry, I don't know how to explain any more than this...I've never had lessons so don't know anything technical.
