Members Dead Star
So I'd like to learn how to scream/growl. It would make our current band situation much easier (right now we're using guests vocals). I know how to NOT do it, now how do I do it right? Members hugbot
Look up a tutorial called "secrets of screaming" by mark baxter. its immensly helpful (although you have to pay) But the condensed version is this. * accept that growling is a flawed sound. Your voice is going to sound different every night. deal with it. just concentrate on hitting the notes and dont tense yourself up trying to sound perfect. *obviously if it hurts your doing it wrong. *use the minimum amount of effort neccisarry to get the sound needed, then immediately dump all your tension between phrases *once you have commited a certain amount of effort into a sound, its impossible to take back. what that means is that once you decide "man im going to smack the HELL out of this upcoming note"-you're screwed. your body is all tensed up, you put too much effort into it and blast straight past it and you tense up even more trying to reign it under control. it goes back to the point above. *to ingrain that into your body do scales of quiet "ga's" all the way up your range into the highest parts of your falsetto. check you arent going "nnn-gah" (meaning your body tensing up anticipating the note) or "gah-uh" (meaning your body isnt letting go of tension once the note is over.) the push of energy comes AT THE ONSET OF THE NOTE not before or after. *do scales where you only growl for one note of the scale then immediately come out of it. *once you've taught your body that youre not going to be stupid and abuse it, it stops unconciously tensing up like youre about to run into a brick wall every time you start yelling, try growling for more notes, then all the way. Members bloodxandxrank
been screaming for 5-7 years now. everyone always say it will rip your voice to shreds. but it wont. LIES! -your scream should be about the same volume as your singing voice. mine is actually a little quieter. -it's not actually screaming. its more of a controlled hacking of a loogy sound.- practice practice practice.-for live situations try overloading your mic. get up in that grille and it should give you a little extra fuzz to smooth things out.-if all else fails make the guitarist do it..... have fun.
