Could use some advice for my husky voice

Hi all, I've been a lurker here for some time but anyway I've a question that maybe someone might be able to answer. I have a huskier voice, which is all well and good when I'm in my lower registers but when I start approaching the higher notes in my range I really cannot get much definition. There is a lot of air in my tone even when I to not be breathy in my higher notes. You can check out the clip below on youtube (its a short ditty about my cat haha).

My vocal teacher mentioned that I probably have thicker vocal folds and that I have to learn how to align them correctly so that no air leaks through. I'm wondering if there is any insight that anyone might have that I can practice with?

I just recorded this with photo booth on my macbook, so quality isn't wonderful.

Your voice sounds fine to me. The tonal quality of your higher notes strikes me as soulful--in fact, to my ears you sound a bit like Michael McDonald when you go higher, and a lot of people like the way he sounds.

I personally can't stand the guy, but that's because of the jazzy-soft-rock sound he had in his big days in the early 80s--it has nothing to do with the tone of his voice.

So, you sound good--performance ready! :thu:

But, Dude, you need some new lyrics! Go out and gather some experience of the comedy & tragedy & farce of human life. Spend less time with your cat.

Don't listen to Mr. Jersey Jack, singing songs about cats is great!

In fact, I once sampled my cat after holding it in front of a microphone for a while and him meowing to let him go (don't worry, I didn't hurt him)

I then analyzed the pitch and put it into a midi sampler, adjusting it to the tune of twinkle twinkle...

I then sang over him

"Twinkle Twinkle Little Cat

How I wonder where you're at

Up upon the branch so high

Like a furball in the sky

Twinkle Twinkle Little Cat

How I wonder where you're at"

This is an entertaining song about cats too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49jKeGyUCJE

But I seem to have digressed a lil...

You have a very relaxed tone... it is very soulful, too.

There's a video by singing success which gives some tips on developing a fuller mixed voice, if that's what you're after.

Thanks for the feedback guys!

I take it mixed voice is a mixture of head and chest voice, right?

Do you know if that has to do with thick and thin fold usage? It's not so much I'm trying to get a fuller sound....its more like, I want it to be articulate and clear, and not as husky. Supposedly that can be done by learning to use the thin folds on your vocal chords.

Anyone else have any insight on this?

Keep going, and practice, then rest your voice.

Hit the high notes even when they sound off. I think in time your mind will recognize what you're trying to do, and in time...you'll be able to do it. This is what I did, and I've gone from an alto to a counter tenor it seems.

I like the song:thu:

You have a very nice sounding voice, and like I said, it's all about practicing and giving it time. Try to project your goal in your mind, and sing songs that exemplify the sound you're trying to reach....Surrounding yourself around songs you aim to sing will help, so be a product of your environment:wave:
