i play guitar in a death metal band but i dont know anything about the extreme vocals that are in death metal music. my singer always inhale screams. he says that that is how most metal singers scream lamb of god for example. he also says that what he is doing is called fry screaming. from what ive heard on you tube "zen of screaming" sounds a lot different and better than what my singer is claiming to do. they dont sound like they are inhaling. can someone clear this up for me?

Your vocalist sounds like he doesn't know what he's talking about, and most professional vocalists will steer you away from this as its a great way to ruin your vocal chords as there is a right way to exhale scream, yet there is NO right way to inhale scream. Every kind of inhale scream is putting extreme stress on the throat.

Lamb of god most certainly doesn't inhale, thats rather dumb to assume that as they don't even sound like inhales.

The only big bands I can think of that still inhale are suicide silence, dr acula, old knights of the abyss, and some white chapel.

ok thats what i was thinking. is there any way i can prove to him that lamb of god and other bands do not inhale? our drummer believes that all of those bands inhale too. i almost got into an argument with them about it today. he got me listening to "now you've got something to die for" and he was showing me how randy blythe inhales.

I remember commenting on your singer's inhale screams before...

I can't even do that inhale screaming {censored} without {censored}ing up my voice...

Play your buddies some Pantera and ask them if they think Phil is inhaling those words/screams.

You can't even annunciate words correctly when you do that. You need outward pressure in order to pronounce a "P" or "D", etc.

Vocal fry is quite different than inward screaming. Vocal fry is when you're doing that cheesey quiet breathy scream where you close off your throat a bit and whisper...although I've seen some other definitions for it by the screamo-kids.

Tell your singer to grow some balls and scream.

There's a spot on Lamb Of God's Sacrament bonus DVD where Randy is in pre-production with Mark and Machine. Randy let's out a long scream, starts doing the vocal fry and when he's done, he goes, "Oh wait, that sounds terrible..." then Morton looks at him and says "Don't do that...that 'aaahhhh' (does a vocal fry).

Randy {censored}in screams...that {censored}s coming out of his rotten gut.

hi again Andrew, i showed him everything that was said on that forum but he denied the criticism and said that everyone on there is not a true metal fan. i found a vid with all of his idols doing vocal training on you tube. ill set him straight next practice.

Theres a big difference between metal fan and vocalist. Anyone can be a metal fan. I've been doing metal vocals for the past 7 years.

Randy was trained by Melissa Cross, so that guarantees he doesn't inhale. Melissa cross, while she doesn't hate inhale screaming, she does steer people away from it, and doesn't teach it to any of her students.

If your vocalist truely thinks real metal vocalists inhale scream, tell him he's not as metal as he really thinks he is, and that inhale screaming is usually the pussies way out from learning how to do real screams.

ANYONE can learn to inhale. It just takes ALOT of practice. Not everyone can exhale scream. Some people just lack the tone, or dexterity to do it. Almost every inhale scream sounds the same, and thus, the actual talent is gone. It just becomes a matter of how long you've been doing it, instead of how good you actually are.

See if you can find the clip of Randy doing jumping jacks while screaming the alphabet, (one of my warm-ups, actually!)....get your singer to do that with the same pitch, with inward screaming.

Why do I get the feeling your singer is around the 16-17 year old range?

I figured as much.....experience prevails.

I can't remember exactly how far into it it is....I can't even remember the song, but it's just Randy, Mark and Machine sitting in the room. Pretty sure it was in pre-production, before they were putting down actual vocals.

I showed my band the vid of randy with Melissa Cross yesterday. my drummer said "randy probably walked out of there like wtf was that" then he said that he used to live near Randy and he used to eat dinner with the guy so he says he knows that randy inhales. I think maybe our singer did get the message that not everyone inhales. but he is not going to change his style.

whatever i give up.

Well, if you get the Zen of Screaming DVD, and you practice a lot, you could probably get a decent quality growl in a few months. It takes years to get really good tone though.

That said, its a lot harder to play and growl at the same time...

I first got interested in screaming about 7 years ago. I'd say I've spent 5 of those 7 years seriously working on it. I could sing before that, but when attempting screaming, I pretty much just abused my throat and dried up after a little while.

See, the tone is the hardest to achieve. Warming up gets you to the point where little effort is needed to get the tone....that gritty, gargle razor-blades instead of mouthwash, kinda sound.

Definitely check out the Melissa Cross stuff, those warm-ups are exactly what get me through practice/studio/live gigs, switching singing/growling/screaming...whatever ya want to call it.
