Rhythm and time are the most important parts of playing any instrument. More important that leads. I've heard many shredders who cannot play decent rhythm to save their life. If you cannot make and keep a groove, you are not a good musician period. Some realize this right away, and others, later. I also agree with the comment about Eddie Van Halen; his rhythm playing is amazing. Very fluid and creative with the best groove.
