  1. I ended up not playing mine as much as I thought I would. I have one of the older ones with the clear pickguard. It's a middle of the road guitar, in my mind. It's not really twangy, not really bluesy. Darker than the Epiphone hollows that are a little cheaper, though. Crunch and distortion will be through your amp/pedals. This guitar turned out to be a real middle-of-the-roader, IMHO.
Also, if you are used to solid bodies, this thing will play like a big dreadnought. Definitely try it first, preferably on the amp you use or as close as you can come wherever you try it. I would not buy it again.

  2. I asked this in the amp forum earlier, but got no real help. Can anyone describe how these sound?

    Thanks.

I tried out a used combo at my local GC last week, after running through about ten tube amps. I was blown away, but didn't want used. Found a cab at a GC, bought that, and found heads at Ant Hill Music in Fort Lauderdale, FL for $312 each. They had 14, (now 13). I will post later, and tell you if it sounds like the WONDERFUL sound I got out of that combo. Stay away from the combos, lots of heat problems, but no problem like that reported on the head/cab units.

Found a cab at a GC, bought that, and found heads at Ant Hill Music in Fort Lauderdale, FL for $312 each. They had 14 brand new heads, not reconditioned, with five year warranties. (now 13). Should be the same since I basically bought the same speakers and head, just two boxes instead of one.

  4. I got to try out a used combo at my local GC that had been returned because of the reverb static. It sounded OUTSTANDING, after I had tested over 10 tube amps.

I decided to not buy used, but found a cab at a GC, (which I bought), and Ant Hill Music in Florida has 14, (now 13) V32H heads brand new, 5 year warranties, for $312 each. Bought one today. Should have the cab and head by mid next week. Post later, but if it sounds even remotely like the combo did, (minus the combo heat problems reported on this site and others), I'm in tube heaven.

  5. I cannot honestly tell you how the head/cab will sound, but I did get to try out a returned Palomino combo last week at my local GC. They had taken it back because the reverb got static in it. Beyond that, after trying out about 12-14 amps in that store all the way up to $900 Fenders, this was the only one that gave me the REAL 60's/70's sound that seems to elude most modern tube amps. (Unless you are willing to go $2K for a Marshall stack)

I honestly...could not believe the sound that came out of that Crate. But I didn't really want a used amp. It was missing a knob,(where you gonna get a gold knob with an amber jewel in it?), and the static problem with the reverb could have been anything from a poorly run line on the reverb tank to a possible bad tube to a less major component. At the $399 asking price,(after haggling, ticket said $444), I decided the internet was my new best friend.

With all that, I read all the reviews I could get my hands on, found a fairly new cab at a GC for $199, (which I bought), and now have found 14 CrateV32H heads sitting down at a place in Fort Lauderdale FL, for $312.95 a head. Ant Hill Music. Look them up. Brand new, not factory reconditioned, with the full five year warranties waiting to go. Guy is a Crate dealer who happened to be at the right place at the right time. They DO STILL EXIST NEW!! FYI, Ant Hill has NO CABS. I bought the cab from GC, and the head from Ant Hill, based on the fact that the combo had lots of heat problems according to the reviews on this website. the Head/Cab setup reports no heat problems. If it REMOTELY sounds like the used combo I tried out in my local GC, I'm in tube heaven and my Line 6's will sit...We'll see - I'll post more later next week when I get them.

FYI, I'm a beginner who plays everyday, 8 months in, at the "Money for Nothing", "Sweet Child of Mine", "Every Breath you take" stage.

But I LOVE gear and believe you can never have too much...
