  1. I like the 1st one.. So over guitarists though.. It's all soo so tired.
  2. Something happens to a guitar players brain when they get to a certain level of ability which amounts to them forgetting about real art and pursuing technique and poop over real artistic statements. Maybe they need to smoke more pot?.. Ingest more mushrooms?.. Listen to more Aphex Twin?.. I'm soo bored.. John Mayer is so lame & that Rhett Shull guy should of blown away in the wind ages ago. Why is everything?
  3. Maybe get the amps down to 13?
  4. Yeah ultimately you are right.. Seem to have just fallen into this mediocre hole of "entertainment" there. Ideally those channels would be full of the most talented and less gear centric players.. But then again if they were they'd prolly not be youtubers right?.. Tom Bukovac can play though! I think his channel shows off what you can do without a carefully staged set behind you. I have 3 amps & guitars and use fuzz, wah and vibe and I can't imagine ever wanting more.. If you're not playing them all on a monthly basis they're redundant and your focus is lost artistically.. Remember art?.. that's the idea isn't it?
  5. I remember the dark days before the web of doom.. I wonder what a Boss PH-2 sounds like I wondered.. There's only one thing for it.. TO THE STORE!! I'm sure those poor 90's music store guys got tired. But yeah it's hard to know with online demos.. Some are definitely better than others and it can be frustrating.
  6. How dare you say that about D & G!.. They've been good to you.. Hell they've been good to us all. Solid and unpretentious.. Yet somehow lacking if that's all that is in your repertoire.
  7. Smooth Phil.. Real Smooth. Let me try this again..
  8. An update!.. Here's this Little Stevie Vai guy talking about him.. I miss the 70's.. In '72 I was in my 1st marriage.. little timmy was just starting school. I was working in my new job at blah blah blah..
  9. Yeah that kinda stuff is underwhelming for sure.. Some kid fumbling through things can be painful.. I think it's just over exposure to this stuff for years and years due to boredom.. I dunno really. Not really articulating myself the best here.
  10. yeah repulsive is a bit strong.. more just underwhelmed.. I don't think i'm criticizing guitar skills, just the scope of their artistry. They seem to be competent enough. I just miss being wowed. I seem to be starved of entertainment and have a routine of watching the same channels over and over and over.. I need to stop I think. I think I prefer the amp repair/guitar setup vids more.. Dave's World & Uncle Doug.. Less pretentious and fun somehow. There's a material aspect to these guitar channels that really miss the point I feel and I find them all pretty much the same. I don't mind the making a living bit.. I just feel there's a correlation between all these Youtubers and mediocrity. Maybe they should listen to more Aphex Twin.. Modern guitarists blow goats
  11. I've been watching YouTube guitar channels for years and lately have been feeling irritated and a little disgusted. Between 'Music is Win', 'Robert Baker' & 'The Troglys Guitar Show' I find myself put off by these guys gushing over new guitars and amps every week and seeing the horde of gear behind them as trophys. This equipment while attractive and cool to look at is ridiculous as well. How many amps and guitars do you need?.. There seems to be a correlation between these characters and an important musical statement. To be fair I haven't heard any of the music these guys have made but I get the impression they're mostly just impersonators.. knowing way too much technique for their own good and for the most part missing the point of gear as simply tools. That 'Fluff' guy with all his recto's he compulsively collects yet struggles to play anything but some generic riffing on them.. 'Tyler' playing a metallica solo note for note and obsessively attempting to nail a tone.. what's the shooping point?.. it's someone elses playing style.. maybe take a bunch of mushrooms and dream up something beyond all this wankery?.. unngh Darrel Braun plays awfully yet every week is gushing about a new guitar he will never make sound great.. nice guy sure.. but who gives a doofy really right?.. it's just bargain bin entertainment that i've so grown tired of and sadly to be honest, am a little addicted to. That pedal show guys are pretty likable but are just gear nerds at the end of it all aren't they?.. missing the point entirely. Look at me mum?! I'm ranting! phillip philington - YouTube
  12. They do look nice.. especially that one. Wait, i'm feeling dirty inside again..
  13. I think in a nutshell it bugs people because it's pretentious and phony. Maybe i've been watching too many Stolen Valor videos though
  14. I think the wood type used is a big factor in cheap guitars. Also even the same type of woods, eg. alder, can be dramatically different sonically in cheaper instruments. My mate bought a cheap squier tele that had an alder body and other than the unusually heavy weight it sounded off compared to my mexican one. I think they use different, less desirable parts of the tree for the cheaper bodies. When it comes to the agathis that alot of squiers use I can hear a quality that is hard to define. I find alder alot more pleasing to the ear and i'd say the agathis can sound thin and the label that comes to mind is toy like. not a great description but is what my brain tells me which I guess in other words is 'cheap'. New pups are going to change things dramatically but again it's not the whole story. I've only owned one cheap guitar I liked which was a tom delonge chinese squier that had a nice resonance.. maybe the hardtail bridge helped i dunno but I remember it was a bit more expensive than the cheap squiers and think I recall it having an alder body that didn't weigh too much so feel that was an exception to the rule. If it was me i'd not bother with the cheapies as they always sound cheap in my experience. save your mexican pups for something more worthy I reckon.
  15. I remember as a teenager when denim jeans came out with the worn in look.. I instantly recoiled as I felt that one of the coolest things you could do with denim was to wear it in naturally. Around the same time new fender guitars started showing up with these confusing finishes that provided a player with a pre worn look to show off.. I felt against this even more than my beloved denim betrayal given that a worn finish comes after decades of playing and not looking after your instrument I think it's cooler to look after your stuff and that any accidental cosmetic wear should be minimized.. I mean you wouldn't buy a car with scratched up doors and rusty chrome but when it comes to guitars it seems we are content on this phony look. Anyway just some musings that am sure have been better worded and thread thrashed here a bunch.. yet here i am complaining How come roadworn pedals aren't a thing?.. roadworn amps?.. I guess guitars are the more visual aspect of a stage performance. Think i'll keep storing my guitars carefully. I have a few that I want to see how long I can keep them immaculate.. Another kind of anal right there phillip philington - YouTube
  16. Ramble On brother.. Stream of consciousness is the most honest of statements.. I love Zeppelin & Purple & Hendrix.. Maybe Zeppelin more than Purple but I don't like to make comparisons as it's tough to compare individual groups.. And yeah those 1st four albums are so good.. Houses of The Holy & Physical Graffiti as well for me too.. Even Presence has it's moments but think a decline was starting by that stage. Thanks for your input man!
  17. Aww cheers man.. Definitely needs vocals.. I get lazy sadly. I was waiting for Steven Malkamus to start singing. Lol over hyped slinger.. And I thought Clapton was boring..
  18. I stopped listening after Stormbringer.. I was in my 1st marriage to Katie back in '74.. little timmy was just starting school.. That damn labour government had just got into power for their second term blah blah.. phillip philington - YouTube
  19. None taken. I think it's wonderful everyone has an opinion. Guitar God is just a silly title for the lack of a better term. He hits the wires real good!
  20. Yeah I realized that. I checked out a few of his other videos too.. he just seems generic to me. I don't know how being a nice guy is relevant in being a talent.. too artistic?.. didn't practice enough?.. I don't know what to say to there. If it's not your thing that's ok.. Duane while in 'The Jesus Lizard' in the early 90's sure wowed me but we're all different and to be honest I think most people would prefer Guthrie. Thanks for your input
  21. I dunno.. he seems like a jack of all trades.. too conventional for me and i think it misses the point. So many guitarists focus on technique at the cost of being real artists.. it's like they can't see the big picture. Give me Duane Denison any day..
  22. Yeah he can play competently alright.. but just not my thing. I miss players that had original phrasing.. I don't feel he has that sadly. I seem to tune out when there's too many notes and not enough rests.. and when i hear the fast stuff it leaves me cold. I know this guy is loved but i truly think the age of the guitar hero is done. Songs however,\ can be written for eternity.
