Members Florbastang
The Artcores are exceptionally well-built and play and sound great. However, they seem more solid-body than semi-hollow to me. They're not particularly resonant and are rather quiet and subdued unplugged, particularly in comparison to the Epi Dot's I've played. On the other hand, the Epi dots feel like crap by comparison. Those were some rough guitars. Then again, it was in GC, so they were probably abused to hell and back. If it were me, it'd be a toss-up between the Xaviere XV-900 and the Ibanez AS-73. I'd also look more into the Washburn HB35. They are discontinued, though, and probably getting quite expensive used as a result.
Members ten56gibby
I would say the Ibanez Artcore. It's the only semi-hollow I've ever ALMOST bought.
Members crashclc
Artcore - especially the custom AS103NT with the Super 58's - FTW! (but there are loads of other decent choices)
Members Electric Blues
Wow! That might well fit the bill.I'm a bit concerned about all these folks saying I'd have to change out the PUPs in just about everything. No. You don
Members plasticscouse
Have you considered Hofner verythins. I was looking at them whenfinding my strat. I compared them to an Epi dot and Casino. The Verythins were just of a higher quality than the dot, more refined. Sound wise, my fiancee noticed that the Dot sounded like my LP (also a Stock Epi), with the verythin sounding different. I would've gone for the verythin, but had no money them. The Casino isn't a 335 clone but that was somewhere in between in terms of quality soundwise I would've gone for the Casino, but for sheer quality and tast it wouldv'e been the Hofner. But as I've pointed out the Casino isn't a 335 clone.
Members jerry_picker
Used Hohner HS-35 (MIK). You might find a used Dot Elitist (MIJ) for under a grand. It likely will be as good or better than a Gibby.
Members twofoolsaminute
If I was buying new, I'd buy an Xaviere. I've mostly run the gambit of the cheapies, and Xaviere's have yet to disappoint me. And you know exactly what you're getting. You will most definately not need to replace the pups in the xaviere. the GFS fat pat's are delightful. Maybe not the greatest ever, but a very nice medium output alnico humbucker, or the guitar is also available in a similar model with p90's (which is what I personally would go for). Full size alpha potentiometers and decent fit, finish, and hardware. Customer service is proven from guitarfetish so the risk is minimal. Seriously, you can't go wrong.
