A good friend of mine used to say that his guitar only had perfect tone when you could actually get tetanus from touching his strings. He changed them once a decade. Reminds me of an old balalaika I tried to learn to play on many many moons ago, the strings were old, rusty and must've been piano wire or somesuch since they cut right through my guitar calloused fingers.
