The second article isn't a revelation - if you listen to pop radio, just about every song uses a I - V - VI - IV pattern, or something close, with the kick on every beat. I don't mind pop music, though. I still listen to it sometimes, and I like the freedom to listen to whatever jazz, prog, fusion, or otherwise more adventurous music whenever I like.
