Members bwalker
I plan on recording my material in my basement and copying and distributing a handful of copies (500-1000). 1) Is it wise for me to register with ASCAP? 2) If so, am I the Writer and Publisher? 3) If so, do I really need to gather all of the "publisher" info? Like Tax ID, etc.??? Do all home studios do this??? ~Brian
Members BlueStrat
You sign up as both writer and publisher. They will only collect from radio stations and retail outlets that report volume sales/airplay. So if you get airplay on a college station, or public radio, or even commercial radio spotlighting local shows, you are unlikely to see a dime. ASCAP or BMI won't do much if anything for you unless you're selling copies by the thousands. Check the sticky at the top of the page. You can also get a lot of questions answered on ASCAP's faq page.
