The Jamey Aebersold play-along materials are for improvisation ... not for learning to play specific instruments.

If you find books for Vibraphone (Vibes), Marimba or Bells ... they will work with Xylophone as well ... they are all mallet percussion instruments.

If you are looking for method books ... the Phil Kraus' Mallet Mallet Method books are good; there are 3 volumes. There are dozens of great books that you could use, but it depends on what you are wanting and what your goals are.

If you want to learn Ragtime Xylophone, get George Hamilton Green's Instruction Course for Xylophone.

You didn't give much information as to what it is you are wanting to learn, and the information you gave was confusing. You asked for "good books" but proceeded to mention play-along materials, and even asked about Band-In-A-Box, which is not a book. Perhaps with a little more information, either I or someone else can give you a better answer.

It's a long and boring book, but it will teach you.

Modern School for Xylophone, Marimba, Vibraphone by Morris Goldberg.

Don't practice on a xylophone. Trust me buddy. It's okay to play on it in concert and last minute preparations, but it's annoying as hell as an everyday practice instrument. Get a marimba and use rubber mallets to get a good light feel.

Vibes are different, and generally only come in 3 octaves. :(
