Members slap happy drums
It's kinda like holding a mouse , too loose and it'll get away from you......too tight and you've got mouse bits all over your hand (hand/wrist pain)
Members BenG
Just relax your hands. it sounds like you're tensing up. I play in a fast band, and what i do to help a lot is stick control exercises. Perhaps pick up a stick control book or video. It will teach you to start using more of your fingers rather than your hand. Hope this helps some.
Members slddrummer
I agree with the other guys. Watch Keith Carlock for hand technique. Great for showing how to loosen up and not get to tense. Most drummers think you've got to flex like crazy to play fast. Not true! It's in dem fingers. Members Noise...
I'd bet money that your grip is off. A few months ago I was getting horrible hand cramps (like what you're describing) whenever I'd play anything. It wouldn't matter if I was just sitting down for a few minutes behind the kit - I'd end up with my hands hurting enough to not only make me stop playing, but to go get the heating pad and wrap my hands with it. Between help from the guys here and my drum teacher, I realized that I was just gripping the stick way too tight. I adjusted my technique ever so slightly - I just loosened my hands a little bit - and the cramps were gone. I strongly suggest that you take a look at your hand technique. That's usually what causes problems like this. Good luck.
Members SyntheticTubs
Also: Heavy stick weights can be an issue, and drinking inadequate amounts of water can contribute to hand cramps.
Members BroadST
What everyone has mentioned so far... +1 I went through the same thing when I started. Tensing up the hands for sure probably your arms and shoulders as well. Relax and start slow.
