Members Nick the DSM
i've been eyeing this kit but i saw on it that it has riveted seams which I've heard makes the drums more prone to cracking. is this true or is it only with stupid people that it happens? Members Cross Eyed Mary
A shell with riveted seams? Never heard of it.
Members hwy145
I think he is referring to riveted wrap at the seams. I remember seeing Ludwigs that had such a feature (maybe late 70's-early 80's), but I've not heard anyone say that the wrap was more or less prone to cracking. Members manoeuver
post a pic. riveted wrap won't crack a drum shell. it is unsightly, though.
Members Nick the DSM
er, there's no pic. yeah, it was that riveted wrap thingy ludwig did. I don't know much about it.

Members devinw
Sounds potentially ugly but I have never seen this (at least I don't remember ever seeing it).... I would imagine that the wrap, when old and more brittle, would crack more easily around a rivet hole due to the edges.

You sir are correct.Ludwig had problems with the wrap shrinking in the early 80s.The solution was to rivet. It did not penetrate through the shell though.I don't know how they did it. Members devinw
Oh well I reckon if it's actual thin sheet metal used as a wrap then riviting might make sense. In that case, I wouldn't see it tearing or cracking at all.
Members iDrum4ever
so...stay away from it? If the seam is all that bothers, go for it.You can hide the seam from view. Even better, consider it a rewrap project.
