I've always known I was adopted, but never knew anything about my birth parents. Would I have been different had I known and had contact w/ my mom while growing up. ..would I have used that as a weapon against my parents (YOU'RE NOT MY MOM!!). . .prolly. Did i turn out ok not knowing? Yep. Do what you feel is right. It's a total Catch 22 for ya in this situation. ..there is always something bad that can happen no matter what path you choose.
