Sending in demos....

Have you or someone on your behalf pre-contacted anyone at these labels? Have they told you, you can send a demo?

If not, you are wasting your time and your demo will either be returned or thrown in the trash.

Almost every label in existence will not accept unsolicited material, which means they haven't asked for it or given prior consent for you or someone on your behalf to send it.

Metal Blade says on their site they will except unsolicited material and they will always get back to you wether they like the demo or not... Elektra says they DON't except unsolicited material, but you can have a professional manager, producer etc. recommend you...

A lot of labels wont listen to it because they could potentially be sued later if they put something out similar to something they recieved unsolicited. It's happened to every major label, a lot of that went down in the 80's. Most majors and many indi's just have a return to sender policy. Metal blade is a rare exception but understand that a 10 song cd is going to be scanned thru for 10 to 20 seconds by an intern and thrown into the junk or pass-it-on pile. I'm betting they sign less than one act every few years through this avenue.

Your best bet - if your not in LA, New York Nashville etc.. and assuming you have little/no contacts, is to get in contact with a lawyer or magement company in one of these towns. Many of the bigger of these will accept nothing unsolicited but there are smaller guys that will work harder and have the tools if they like your stuff. Look in the back music industry trades (do a search on google for "music connection" or CMJ, there are lots of different ones). There are books and articles galore for lawyer and manager lists. Label reps listen to music that thier friends, collegues, and other people they know hand them and thats just about it.
