Think long and hard about it. You may get royalty rights but some publishing agreements read like a congressional bill. Do you really want to sell the rights to your music? It means that once you no longer own it, you can even be prohibited from performing it on any other medium, like radio, TV or recording. They can sell it to whomever to be used for whatever. It's a trade off, and there can be great benefits. Just know what it means to sign with a publishing company. BTW, most major label record companies want you to surrender your publishing to them as well.

you won't get prohibited from performing it and you get 50% of royalties just like the publishing co gets 50%. yeah it sucks they get half but they have the contacts, keep track of royalties, and make sure no one steals your song. they can only sell it to whomever if you agree to let them do this in your contract. you should (if you will seriously play these live) license it to whatever company. you can get this put into your contract. as for major labels, of course they want your publishing rights, otherwise why would they sign you? but you don't have to give it to them. plenty of people do because they don't know any better and either they didn't get a lawyer or they didn't get an entertainment lawyer. and....publishing companies also help get you signed if you are good. if you can't really sing or play an instrument than they can sell or license your songs. publishing companies also sell and license songs to record companies by the way, for other artists.

Probably need some credentials. Try getting some endorsement deals from equipment Manufacturers (instruments you use). Depending on where you are located, maybe join a musicians union. Get some connections in the music industry. Good luck on your endeavors

It depends on ther agreement you sign. Many guys sell all the rights to their music unaware. Record companies are notorious for this. They get all the publishing rights and can sell the stuff to whomever and for whatever they want, and the writer has no say in it. And while the writer can still perform the songs live, he often cannot record them with another label or on any recorded medium such as videotape or hard drive without permission from the publisher. This is why John Fogerty cannot perform on television or re-record any of his hit songs from the Creedence Clearwater days, because of ownership issues that are still pending legal outcomes. Similarly, Paul McCartney cannot stop Beatles songs he wrote from being used in commercials because Michael Jackson owns all the rights to them.

actually michael jackson owns half of the publishing. he bought the publishing company. in fact he out bid paul for it. i heard a story about this, actually before it happened, where Paul met MJ and he gave him some advice (this was in the late 70's when he was starting his solo career) he said these few words, "publishing is where the money is" . then what happens down the line? MJ buys the publishing company that had the Lennon/McCartney stuff and prevents paul from getting ALL his publishing. tricky eh?
