Members AlLuminum15
Hello guys! Just wanna say hi on my first post! I was searching the net for some singing forums, and luckily I stumbled into this one (Hooray!) and I was impressed by the contents. Just so you know, I love singing. But it seems that my voice sounds WAY too bad to me. I dunno why, but people say that I sound okay, but even I can't appreciate it. I think I need some help developing my tone maybe (, and at the same time improve the upper and lower parts of my range (C#2 - C4, can extend my chest voice to E4, though it's hard, and up to G5 in falsetto). I can sing Crash Test Dummies' songs pretty okay, but I want to find more song choices. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Maybe I could post a sound clip of me singing, so you guys could help me even more. Anyways, thank you for reading this post! Have a good day! Members Tyson2011
sound clips would definitely help! Off the top of my head, if you're comfortable with crash test dummies, HIM's music would be suitable to you. I dont really like their music, but the voice type is very similar
Members AlLuminum15
I'll try listening to them. Actually, my voice sounds very different from crash test dummies (my voice is lighter I guess) but the range of the songs are the same as mine. Right now I'm practicing Iris by Goo Goo Dolls, with a lower chorus of course, and I hope it wouldn't sound bad. I'll try to upload tomorrow. Members AlLuminum15
And, this is my try on Iris. It's rushed since I don't want my roommate to hear it (haha) and I think it's bad. I need honest comments! Thank you! XD http://picosong.com/w6bn/
Members Tyson2011
the actual recording quality is pretty iffy, so its hard to make things out. What I notice is that its very pitchy and breathy, and you don't commit to the ends of phrases at all. That said, you've got a pretty decent voice to work with, it just needs a lot of smoothening out
Members AlLuminum15
Well, I recorded this from my phone, so yeah. I really have a hard time fixing my 'breathiness' and being off-pitch, so I think I might get a vocal teacher this summer. And I still don't like my tone. Hahaha! Thank you! For technical exercises, you can try getting "The Voice Book" by Kate Devore. There are separate chapters on Alignment/Posture, Breathing, and Resonance. The nice part is that she gives specific exercises. So you can build a daily routine around them. You can work on your alignment, posture, breathing, and resonance daily until you finally start voice lessons. Also, you can do a vocal workout to strengthen your voice. It makes it easier to hit your pitches. I'd recommend either "The Contemporary Singer: Elements of Vocal Technique" by Anne Peckham or "Vocal Warm-Ups" by Hal Leonard. I do Anne Peckham's workout 6 days a week (High Voice on Mon-Wed-Fri, Low Voice on Tue-Thu-Sat, rest on Sundays). It's nice because it not only covers different rhythms, and pitches, but also different consonants and vowels. So you get a very thorough workout that works most of the muscles you sing with. The Hal Leonard book is more for advanced/professional singers IMHO.
Members AlLuminum15
Thank you (and sorry for the late reply)! I'll try to purchase that book, and I'll practice this coming Christmas and summer break! XD I think I can sing better than that recording though, I was just in a hurry and I was trying to minimize the volume of my voice so the other boarders won't hear me. Hahaha! But I really think my problem is how to classify my voice type. I have a tessitura of a bass, and a timbre of a baritone. Weird. Hahaha.
Members urca
See if you can track down a book called "Unlocking Your Inner Vocalist" by Linda A. Schnerpelli. Lots of good exercises and insights there. Hard to find but maybe a used copy kicking around somewhere.....
