Most composers of contemporary four-part harmony are actually writing SABB; the "tenor" part is often nothing difficult for a practiced baritone voice, and nowhere close to the dizzy heights of an operatic tenor.

That's a very, very narrow view of choral music sir.

Are we not going to talk about Avi Kaplan? He is the bass singer from the a cappella group Pentatonix and they technically are a part of Mainstream music. Their three albums have placed very high on the charts for an a cappella group. Their most recent album hit 10 for US top 200, 2 for US top digital albums and 1 for US top independent albums.

Avi sings very often below C2 but he is mostly not singing solo, as Pentatonix does have a stella Baritone, Tenor and Soprano (Or alto I am not sure I have not looked into it). He does sing solo in the higher part of his register in some songs (

for example), but he does sing some nice deep solos during their Thrift Shop cover (
).

Mostly, his amazing bass-ness is just used for effect (bass drop etc) and you can check that out in Can't Hold Us (

) and Carol of the Bells (
) and basically any of their songs.

He can also do overtone singing ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nCRtS4L1_k0 ) and they do use it in some songs such as Aha! (

).

Bonus songs: Avi singing part of the Misty Mountains song from The Hobbit ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_1FbmpVR78 ), some opera ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cnLMYTmgpn0 ), also Avi got excited and accidently blew out some speakers during a perfomance (

).

Sorry this just turned into an Avi Kaplan appreciation post...

It's difficult not to be a jealous fanboi, I feels ya breh.

But, 4 reels, I think Avi Kaplan has not been mentioned because he sings harmony almost always, not lead. The OP of this thread might not have written it out but I think he meant lead vocalists that don't sing much above E4.
