So, half of my wife's family lives in New Orleans & surrounding communities. Her grandma and cousin live Southeast of downtown across the river in a suburb called Belle Chasse. While there was no flooding, there was a tornado & her grandma, aunt & uncle, and cousins are now homeless... Houses totally levelled.

If they choose, we may have some new housemates for a while. Seeing it on TV is one thing but when it hits home, this kind of thing has a totally different affect on you.

There's an entire thread over at Fark (http://www.fark.com) of people willing to let people stay with them, at least for the short-term. I don't know if that will help anyone, but it's about a page down, maybe more by this time. Tons of people willing to help out those who had their homes destroyed. It's something you might want to pass on to them as an option.

Weird... I can't find that thread. I'm not sure they'll want to come all the way here, but her grandma and aunt & uncle are probably going to live with my mother in law in New Mexico, so you never know.

Right now it's the 4th thread down.
