Members ChrisAlgoo
I don't know what whitechapel sounds like, and unfortunately I can't get to youtube. I am familiar with Opeth/Amon Amarth-style growling, which is generally pretty excellent. Are you familiar with vocal fry? It's when your voice goes so low, it starts to break up(try it now! go to the very bottom of your range). Practice making those sounds while having a ton of airflow and an open throat. (don't let your throat close up! that's where damage comes from!) The goal here is to make the sound easy and smooth, with good airflow and no damage to your throat. Now, this isn't your growl, but this exercise will allow you to growl really well. Lots of people can growl, I imagine, but growling safely is another thing. I hear Akerfeldt (Opeth guy) hurt himself recently, and he's one of the best. You need to take care of your instrument.
