Anybody use a DI for an amp backup?

Not unless it's designed to "color", like a Sansamp - which is part preamp/EQ/overdrive anyway, rather than a pure DI.

For instance, a Countryman is designed for transparency. It would provide no more color than the A/B/Y box you proposed in your first diagram.

There are lots of ways to do it, but you don't need the A/B/Y box. Almost all DIs have a "through" output to get to your amp as well as the balanced out to the PA. They do the splitting for you.

Some DIs, like the Countryman, can be put either before the input OR between the amp's speaker out and the cabinet. These types have a -30dB pad to handle power amp output. You get the tone of your head without mic'ing a cabinet. That's what my question was about.

That's what I want then, although still some of my sound comes from my speakers.
