If you like straightforward, clean sound and simple controls, the PB1 is a good choice. Usually they can be found used at really good prices, too. The potential minuses are the fact that there's no OD, bells and whistles, or built-in effects like most preamps you'd buy today. Other than that, they're nice pieces of gear. I have a sansamp DI (that needs repair) if I ever need it, but I never have in the past. This will be replacing a stopgap 31band eq and dbx compressor that I've been using as a preamp for 3 years.
