"Customizing" a Squier P-Bass

Well, we all know that the majority of Squiers blow major ass. BUT since I love the look of the old school Fenders (see http://img3.musiciansfriend.com/dbase/pics/products/1/0/1/268101.jpg, http://img3.musiciansfriend.com/dbase/pics/products/4/0/6/336406.jpg)

I want to paint it gray, with a black pickguard. After playing a '62 P-Bass in my music theory class in high school, I've always loved the look. I know the wood quality on Squier's aren't the best, but what pickups will help me gain a very good tone? I'm looking for something vintage, yet rock and roll. Also, what kind of strings do you recomend? To be honest, I have no idea what flatwound or roundwound strings are. I plan on buying a vintage Fender P-Bass bridge (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Fender-P-BassJ-Bass-Vintage-Bridge-Assembly?sku=361387), and slapping on a bridge cover over it. Then I plan on adding some kickass pickups, and putting a pick-up cover over them. What would you guys recomend that I do? I still want to salvage the bass so I can still have a "beater", or perhaps become my main bass (I only own an Ibanez RTB-80).

Thanks a lot in advance.

Before you sink a lot of money into that Squier, maybe you should look at the new Squier Vintage P's and Jazzes. Better PU's.

+1

You might need to upgrade the pots and jack but the overall quality of the VM series is outstanding. Much better than the MIM's imho.
