I'm looking for (who does not ;-) a well balanced/focused (both in sound and feel) 5 str. set for 34" scaled 5 str. bass.

Preferably (tight wounded/smooth warmsounding) Nickel with soft to medium tension.

What's important to look for, when it comes to:

Taper wound/ordinary wound

Light/medium/heavy gauges

Light/medium/thigt tension ?

Does "string through body" increase balance/focus/tone ?

Which set are supposed to give the most balanced output in comparision between (same brand/material) 0.040 - 60 - 80 - 100 - 128 or

0.045 - 65 - 85 - 105 - 128 (the same 0.128 B str. in both sets)?

I don't know. Try em' out. Personally I would go with the second set mentioned, but I like bigger strings.

The beauty part is if you don't like em' you can always switch. I know they are expensive to start, but it's not the end of the world if you pick the wrong ones.

Is there any established advantages for taper wound strings compared to ordinary wounded strings?

Does, for ex. tapered strings allways intonate better?

Is a tapered B str. allways more focused than an nontapered B str. of the same brand and gauge?

and finaly...

Which qualities are the most critikal to get good intonation, good balance in output and feel and good focus out of a set of B - G basstrings
