Peavey gear is solid, you should look into the amps as well as the basses for affordable and reliable gigware.

Also, you should look at the Ashdown MAG300. It's not a metalhead's dream amp but it's plenty loud and it's not expensive. Pair that with a Peavey 4ohm 2x15 or 4x10 cab and you'll have an amp that will gig.

 

He does need more money though, unless you can find some smokin' deals on used stuff. A good rule of thumb for metal bass is at least 300w and at least a 4x10 or 2x15 cab. Of course, other people will disagree with me, but metal is loud and you'll need to move some air. Don't get a 2x10.:D
