Members Philter
First off let me thank in advance anyone who takes the time to offer some advice. I do song arrangements. I used to program the bass parts, but after positive reviews on this site I picked up a Rogue Hofner knock off and started playing the bass parts. However I have run into problems with the rogue, primarily it is a bitch to get it to play in tune up and down the neck. The bridge is primitive and I can't get the bass to play in tune, basically. The violin bass I have is kind of a niche instrument anyway, and besides the tuning problems I need a bass with a more traditional and versatile rock/pop sound. The arrangements I do are typically top 40, rock, modern rock, adult contemporary, pop country, etc- along that line. So what would you guys recommend as a reliable, versatile bass? I'm looking in the sub-$600 price range. My first thoughts are Fenders and Yamahas- am I on the right track?

Members Funkee1
Get you an SX Jazz copy. It'll cost you less than $200, and play like a $1000 bass. Plus, they are easy to upgrade.

Members jasper383
Squier Modified Vintage Jazz or a used beat up G&L +1 I would add the:http://bass-guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Squier-Vintage-Modified-Precision-Bass?sku=519638 and the:http://bass-guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Squier-CLASSIC-VIBE-Jazz-60s-Bass-Guitar-?sku=519578 The Squiers are now every bit as good as the MIM Fenders, in my opinion. I would recommend a Precision Bass for recording; less chance of noise entering the mix.
Members gonzobassman
Squires do get the love on this forum.Probably get a better bass if you go with a used Ibanez(I've never owned one myself),or Shecter.

Members DZello
I have a Yamaha RBX270 that I love. Great rock sound and the neck is comfy. You can find one used for almost nothing!

Members Mytola
I'd say G&L Tribute L2000 (or L2500 if you want a fiver) would be perfect.

Members Rob Martinez
I use a Waterstone Indra bass to record with and it sits in the mix very nicely. A Waterstone TP 12 string bass just kicks ass!
