Pavarotti of the Plains, Luciano of LaMesa.

Hardly known outside of Texas and quite a shame so I wanted to honor him here, worldwide. He passed back in 2006 after serving for 40 years in the Texas Guard putting his music career off until he was well into his 50s. In 1990, Walser was "discovered" at age 56.

Don Walser was voted "Best Performing Country Band" at the Austin Music Awards, was voted top country band of the year by the Austin Chronicle in 1996, and received an Association for Independent Music "Indie" Award in 1997.

Singer, songwriter, father, soldier and yodeler extraordinaire, Don Walser was one of the last great Country & Western singers. True to his art and loyal to his idols, Don sang and yodeled his way into the hearts of thousands of devoted fans. In the tradition of Hank Williams, Jimmy Rodgers and Bob Wills Don played traditional Country music, because as Don used to say "Without the roots, the whole tree dies".

I played a benefit for him about 10 years ago and was astonished at the outpouring, and of the names that showed: Jack Ingram, Miranda Lambert, and a bunch of Local and Regional Hero's that were just glad to be a part of helping such a great, but unfortunately unknown talent.

RIP Mr. Walser, you're hardly forgotten.
