On-Board Bass Preamps?

So I'm pondering an electronic upgrade for the Rockbass. It's already gutted, and has had some wires cut. So if I were going to do a preamp upgrade, now would be an optimal time.

I know not much about preamps. Do they all do basically the same thing? Or will one produce different tones (in the same bass with the same pickups) from the next?

If they're different sounding, what would the wisened crew of HCBF suggest? It's a standard Warwick Rockbass. MEC Single coil pickups. Looking for a growly, aggressive tone, but with plenty of lows as well.

Discuss.

Please?

:idk:
I'd stay passive.

i don't think that'll work? IIRC - there's too many wires running from the pickups. there's a sheathed 2-conductor wire, and a separate red one, coming off of each pickup.

doesn't that indicate that the pickups themselves are active???

(i truly don't know. i'm asking :) )

Nordie pups have a pickup pole ground wire in addition to the main two. Could be similar...
