Members HackedByChinese!
So HBC, when can I bother you to help me figure out how to get my system startup time back to a manageable duration. It seems like every program I install adds itself to the startup process and now a year and a half in to running the T61 it works great once it is up and running, but the getting up and running business is pissing me off. Here's what I generally try when WinXP starts to slow down: If you pres Ctrl+Alt+Del and open Task Manager, how many processes are running on the machine currently? A clean install without anything else running generally has 29-32 going when the machine starts. A useful tool is CCleaner, as mentioned earlier in the thread-you can use it to check what's running with Windows at startup, and it can also remove stuff from the registry that's out of date or no longer necessary: http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner You could also try defragmenting your hard disk using Defraggler, a product by the same people who make CCleaner: http://www.piriform.com/defraggler Check the Startup folder in the Start menu and see if there's an excessive amount of stuff in there. Anything in that folder will run when you log into your user account. That should get you started.

HBC can help you clean it up, but to prevent it from happening again you could try this great little program: http://www.mlin.net/StartupMonitor.shtml It basically tells you every time a program tries to add something to your computers startup menu. Super handy for keeping stuff like this in check. I use CCealaner or Easy Cleaner to manage my startup programs. My $0.02 for what its worth. Digital Line Detect (whatever the hell that is) Microsoft Office Quickbooks Agent Update I doubt I need any of those. Thanks!

Members HackedByChinese!
105 - this looks like the problem to me. Here's another useful trick, then. Go to Start --> Run and execute msconfig.exe. Go to the Services tab, check "Hide all Microsoft services," and see what all is running. You might be able to cut down on them through that method as well.
Moderators Kindness Posted January 26, 2010 Moderators Share Posted January 26, 2010 Good plan. I've looked at that before, but I never actually turn stuff off for fear of messing things up. I guess worst case scenario I just turn them all back on!
