Members tommorichards
I have a short scale kay bass. I like it, it has flatwounds, but the problem is that the low E does not ring out. I wonder if anyone knows why this is. If required i can upload some soundclips and pictures. Ive had it for years, but its always had this problem. Members Emprov
Dumb question but here it goes: you've changed the strings, right?
Moderators Kindness Posted March 1, 2010 Moderators Share Posted March 1, 2010 You have two things working against a functional E string - flatwounds and the short scale.

I'd try using an extra heavy round for the E and leaving flats on the rest, personally. I've used a round B and flat EADG on my fiver before and it really cleans up the B's sound. Members tommorichards
Yeah, its the second new o strings set ive tried on it, and still mutey. Does a flatwound E on other basses ever have a problem with being quieter? Could it be a problem with the bridge?
Moderators Kindness Posted March 2, 2010 Moderators Share Posted March 2, 2010 Does a flatwound E on other basses ever have a problem with being quieter? Yes, and IME, the thicker the gauge of flatwound, the worse the effect.
