Ok,

So I'm working on revamping my cover bands song list... I want to kick ass from start to finish. We do up to 40 songs a night. What songs do you all think need to be on the ULTIMATE SONG LIST for a rock band? We can play stuff like sweet home alabama or get as heavy as system of a down...

HELP!!!

To be totally honest, look up the threads in this forum and over at the Live Sound & Production forum about the songs no musician ever wants to hear again. That should give you a rough idea of what bar patrons expect to hear when they go watch a cover band.

So as much as I hate to admit it, your list will include the following (sorry Tedster):

Sweet Home Alabama

Mustang Sally

Brown Eyed Girl

Cocaine

Play that Funky Music

Brick House

Margaritaville

Takin' Care of Business

If you really want to blow them away, though, compile your list of musicians' most hated tunes, throw out all the tune names but keep the list of band names, then pick the kick ass tunes by those bands that don't get played as often.

I think you should post an example of a recent setlist so we know what kind of things to suggest.

Here's our entire set list from the last few gigs. I want to eliminate about 80% of the songs on there! We want to be more top 40 rock...with a little bit of 80's in there... Also, we'd like to touch on the "variety" market a bit with stuff like Save a horse, hey Ya, etc....

I don't see why any setlist should include those songs. Everyone knows 'em, or can fake their way through 'em anyhoo. Be original. Don't play those songs unless some nubile girl walks up to the stage, rips her top off, and has "Sweet Home Alabama" painted across her naked bazooms.

Well, you know what I mean. Why is it THOSE songs? What about other equally popular songs???? You mean to tell me that out of 40+ YEARS of rock and roll, all anyone can come up with are those 10-15 songs?
