You could use an old laboratory laser. The main laser effect at a gig is by throwing the laser through some mirrors and some motorised mirrors. Lasers are dangerous though and you need a licence in the Uk to use one in a public place. There was a device called a Emulator (by high end I think) that gave quite a good laser style effect in the sense of fast movement but didn't have the licence and hazard problems.
