They would pick up whatever the sound is on the stage floor.. not necessarily what you want in your IEM's. I have a couple of boundary mics and they can be used for ambient sound.. I have actually even recorded the band with them mounted out in front of the stage with pretty good results. But what "ambient" sound are you trying to capture? The band or the audience? Members Dogoth Posted September 5, 2007 Members Share Posted September 5, 2007 If you're trying to pick up the audience, I would opt for a directional (well somewhere around a 1/4 sphear) one like shure sm91. Most guys that use ears and have audience mics mixed in, have their engineer pot them in for song breaks and back out during the songs. If your trying to get a more ambient sound of your band (during songs) it can be problematic. What you'll more than likely get is a very funky/phasey comb filter effect.
