Economy - Signs of life?

Mine is an "in the trenches" report from a little guy in the biz. In order to keep working I've had to reinvent myself as a DJ and karaoke host. That part of the business is going really well - better than I could have ever expected. Having a decent sound system complete with multiple 18" subs coupled with the fact that I don't drink on the gig has kind of put me in demand. And these rooms are really busy compared to the live music venues I've been involved in recently. Clubs are definitely not dying!

I actually have a live gig this weekend. They don't come up more than once or twice a month anymore, with the exception of my volunteer work as a keyboard player in a Praise Band every Sunday. That band has been my main musical outlet for the last three years.

i'm up from last year. steady growth for the past 5 years. fingers crossed that a few of the series I did this year will re-up in 2011. I'm heading into the slower months, but i have work through November. Friday's Steve Miller band show sold out weeks ago.. for me it's super tough Jan-March

I was in a very large music store today, where I've been a customer for probably 35 years. A buddy of mine , who works in the acoustic guitar dept., told me that things have REALLY slowed down compared to last year at this time. I was shopping for a fairly hi-end nylon-string guitar, and they only had two worth $1k or more. They're usually flush with the hi-end stuff, but it's just not moving.

The music store an old boss of mine runs in seattle says they are seeing strong growth all around. Especially in the expensive end of the pro audio MI market. He's an excellent manager and they've been scouting new clients and taking the few GC pro clients GC has. There has been quite a shift in the market in the last few years and it's nice to see good people coming out ahead.

That being said, 1 agent I work with has been slowing loosing business because the club/casino market has gotten smaller. He hasn't changed his business model and I don't know how he's gonna keep it together in a year. Round hole, square peg. Adapt adapt adapt. And the 1 project I do with him should be freaking busy 8 nights a week, but no. I don't feel sorry for him at all. no pity.

Just an up-date.

This September's gross revenue has now matched pre-down turn Septembers gross . . . and it's only the 14th!

To put that in perspective, ESC is 30k past last months gross already. If I'm dreaming, please don't wake me.

I don't think you're dreaming, and even if you are, I've found that at our age, our dreams are generally only a few degrees seperation from reality.

BTW: Good job, and keep up the good work... because it probably is work that is responsible. And it probably isn't actually work, but years of working paying off in doing something extremely well that you find great satisfaction in doing extremely well... which really isn't work is it? Unless you get sidetracked and happen to count up the hours (in an attempt to figure out why you're so sore most mornings)
