Poparad
The tonic is the 'home base' note of a scale or key. It's the note that everything centers around. Usually it's numerically referred to as 1 or I. When you listen to songs, they almost always resolve to the I chord, and melodically things want to go towards the tonic note as well. Members edeltorus
Isn't the first chord of the scale also called the Tonic? Always thought so.. (e.g. G-Major chord in a G-major scale). Nils
Poparad
Yep. There can be both a tonic note and a tonic chord.
Members Joe Merlino
Just for completeness' sake: I - Tonic ii - Super Tonic iii - Mediant IV - Subdominant V - Dominant vi - Submediant vii - Leading Tone
