I'm a new player and I have been trying to learn Stairway to heaven. The 5th note is high E 7. But the tab also shows a D 6. Are they to be played at the same time? I know its not a chord, but i'm confused as how to play it. I looked up some basic tab reading and haven't found a answer. The tab i'm going by is on Guitar tab universe.com. Sorry if its a dumb question, i've learned other songs ang haven't run across it before.

The dumbest questions are ones that are not asked. You came to the right forum for asking questions, all of us "experts" here will give you answers. As far as dumb, the answers are sometimes as dumb as any question.

I don't have the TAB in front of me, but if one is right above the other, yes, play them both. A lead can encompass single notes, double notes and even chords.

Hey Laker. There are no stupid questions especially not if you are a beginner.

It is when we are new to the guitar we have the most questions and really needs the answers more then ever.

For most people we learn a lot in the first years we play and then it gets harder and harder to improve.

I am not sure what part of Stairway To Heaven you are talking about but I am pretty sure it's the intro.

What you have to do there is to play all the notes on the D-string with your thumb and use your index, middle and ring finger to play the other notes. The note on the 6th fret of the D-string must be played at the same time as the 7th fret of the high E-string. So you should end up with playing the 7th fret of the high E with your ring finger of your right hand but also at the same time pluck the 6th fret of the D-string with your thumb.

Tabs are of great help in the beginning when our ears isn't well developed.

Let me recommend some good tab sites.

You need the program powertab. That is all you ever need. Forget about all those boring and bad looking text tab sites they usually have 90% inaccurate transcribed parts anyway.

Install powertab. It's free.

http://www.power-tab.net/downloads.php install the program named ptabe1_7.zip

Then go here and download Stairway To Heaven

http://www.powertabs.net/pta.php?page=song,2673

If you are not sure what some tab symbols means then use the help menu in the program or you can also go here http://www.endprod.com/tab/

Reading tabs is pretty easy and won't take you long to handle.

Here are more good powertab sites.

Good luck with your playing :)
