Question about Tom Petty's You Got Lucky

I'll try to explain this as best as possible. I bought an authentic tab book with this song in it, but the chords are very strange versions of what just sounds like AM/Dm etc., to me.

I've watched some live footage of him playing, and he doesn't really stray from first position much. Is that the tab book suggests more of a cumulative voicing from the whole band (keyboards, multiple guitars) and not neccesarily what Tom Petty or Mike Campbell is playing?

The book shows it going like this:

XX4111 (5th fret) Am9

XX3111 (5th fret) Am

x13421 (5th fret) Dm9

X13421 (5th fret) Dm

131411 (3rd fret) G7sus

134211 (3rd fret) G9

Am9 Am

You better watch what you say,

Dm9 Dm G7sus G G9 G7sus

you better watch what you do to me......

(Hope that turns out aligned right)

Anyway, I can make these stretchs if I go slowly, but it doesn't seem to sound as good as your conventional fist position versions. I do want play the song the 'correct' way, but this doesn't sound or look like what he's playing, at least to me.

Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.
