Members Mercenary
the song is in Dm however, the first riff in the song: D-12-0-13-0-12-0-10h12--|-0-0-13-0-12-0-10h12---|-0-0-13-0-12-0-10h12---|-0-0-13-0-16h17p16-0---| why is D# and F# in there? What scale for Dm uses D# and F#? Reason I ask is bellamy mainly uses harmonic and natural minor scales.
Poparad
It's just a G harmonic minor scale, although the riff is written around 'D,' so technically that would make it D phrygian dominant. Also, a minor point but the 13th fret note would be an Eb, not a D#, since there's already a D in the scale, and if it were called D#, the scale would have no 'E' in it (7 note scales always have one of each letter). Members GreenAsJade
It depends who you ask. The reason it is differentiated here is not in what "the note sounds like" (they sound the same). It is "what do we call it, in this context". In the context of D major scale, we call the 7th note C#. This allows us to say D E F# G A B C# D without repeating ourselves D E F# G A B Db D It's "how it's done". Of course, if you were to ask a heavy duty musical theoretician, I think they can tell you reasons why D# is not even the same note as Eb. These are the same sort of people that like to sell you guitars will wiggly frets that will sound better... maybe it matters maybe not But for sure the reason why Poperad said "call it Eb" is the first reason I gave (and he did, too).
