I don't understand (tape recording)

Ok, don't blame at me but...I always hear talking about the warmth given by tape recording.

How is this achieved? Should I imagine something like "tubes vs transistors" in tape versus, for example, computer recording? Has this something to do with the converters?

Would I achieve the same goal in recording my ended track on a 2nd hand eighties walkman? :D

honestly, that's what i've been doing as of late. I use fruity loops on my laptop as a drum machine, and play and sequence into a tape recorder. I just like the lo fi hiss.. which I also love in hybrid synths.

I think the warmth comes from either that or some sort of thing that happens when you clip.. you dont clip, but they say it washes back into the tape or something and gives it some warmtnh.. i dunno.. that's what i've heard from a few weirdos that were into 4 tracks and all.. lol

But all they listen to is those emo bands that mumble ontop of some slow, lousy guitar playing in every song. lol So what do they know!

*edit.. aww you beat me to it.
