Get me started recording/sequencing right now! (laptop help)

Recommended Posts

I am throwing myself into the deep end of the DAW pool. My bottled up creative energy is making me tweak out. I'm planning to grab a Tascam FW1082 (unless somone wants to point out any serious drawbacks) and I would like to get a PC laptop that I can use with it to do recording and sequencing on Ableton. How much power and memory will I need to get started? I don't want to starve but I also don't want to frustrate myself with non-functional gear.

Further down the road I'd like to get a Macbook, build a desktop powerhouse and do the Mac/PC combo thing. Any thoughts on how to comprehensively divvy up studio duties between the two?

Anyway I'll still need a PC notebook for a few things, and since out of the three it will ultimately be the one I place the least strenuous performance demands on, I want to put the least money into it, and buy it first.

Why not just get the Macbook? It's not that expensive and it will run any PC software you need. You might not need multiple computers if it's dual core chip is fast enough for you, which it very well might be.

Also, Live is a universal binary, so it would be a great match.

I can link you to some ram you could use to install the full 2gigs for less than $150. Can't go wrong with that setup.

...maybe an external firewire or usb2 hardrive to

keep audio tracks out of the danger zone, and separate partitions for audio apps...

still hearing xperienced users losing it all because

they trusted an OS...or refused to buy a few blank frisbees...how sadddd...

have fun!
