Unlike CoreAudio, you get all the fun of figuring out what external devices are connected to the ports as well. Now I've finished the code, I'm trying to get it adopted in various projects that desperately need it. So far ChucK and the FS1R editor. I've written C, objective C and C++ code that fondles it and it looks much the same. If you go into the message passing areas, it quickly becomes more objectiveCy.
