Basically the government gave federally controlled lands to schools. Ohio University was founded in 1803 in Athens, OH. Ohio State as part of a campaign to be better than OU started emphasizing the "the" in front of the name to distinguish itself. Basically it's the same reason the OSU marching band is known as "The Best Damn Band in the Land" or TBDBITL (pronounced ta bid el). It really is just part of the institution, like all other universities they have their own little quirks and traditions. (Texas A&M's bonfire-before the horrible accident a few years ago, and Penn State and Joe Paterno). And honestly the Buckeye battle cry is one of the best fight songs out there.We are buckeyes, we are posionous nuts. I think it should be THE University of Cincinnati too.
