But I don't think we are. - I agree the parts he is playing are great. I think you are saying that. - And his role is central to the song. I think you are saying that also. That's not my point. The point is ... I'm not hearing any key click in Jon Lord's parts. It's basically an on-off envelope. (Maybe my ears are messed up.) It blends better because it has a simple envelope relative to the universe of keyboard sounds (brass stabs, piano and mallet struck sounds, synth filter sweeps, etc.). My point is that Jon's excellence in metal is related to the simplicity/passivity of his keyboard sounds. If he expanded his tonal spectrum, they might not sound so good, and it might not be "metal".
