Members awilson40
Please help me out.I'm trying to get a good , medium Distortion sound.More than my Bad Monkey OD (which is great) but less than a metal type or Fuzz distortion.I hate Hiss and noise but am I going to have to settle for some in any pedal I buy ??I have tried a Black Dog, hiss when above 3/4 driveand the Digitech tone driver which sounds great but again...when I get thesound I want, there is a constant hiss. Is this just a thing I have to live with in any crunch / distpedal ?? Thanks
Members CurtisM
At high gain levels anything will make noise. If its boosting the sounds you want, its also boosting hte noise. You could get a noise gate to combat that. Also, what kind of guitar do you have? Single Coils or Humbuckers? Single coils hum a bit and through a lot of gain that becomes a lot more appearent. Shielding your guitar better would help reduce the hum.
Members awilson40
Thanks I have a Carvin TL 60 with 1 single and one humbuckerI really dont get any hum from either, I run good cables and really have the guitar shielded well. All I really get from the distortion pedals is back ground hiss. I have a Zoom G2 which I use for EQ , reverb, chorus, etc and I use its nois reduction which does a pretty good job.I also have a barber Tone Press that I leave set and on all the time. What is the quietest, best sounding crunch / med distortionpedal around $100 ??BTW, I run a miked Crate GFX65 with a Celstion speaker.
Members erik92da
Any distortion/OD pedal ive ever tried has been noisy when its gain control is set over noon - 2 oclock. I've used a DS-1 and a RAT both with the gain at about 10 oclock without seeming noisy to me. Any noise you do hear is not noticible in a live environment though. Also, running the volume high on your amp, even on the clean channel, will add noise.
Members sense_of_henry
I wouldn't go the noise gate route; you can lose some playing dynamics and low volume sustain when it kicks in. If you are OK with that, then I will shut up

Members Terrorizer
Try putting your compressor after your noise gate........... Doing this does not squeeze up the volume of the noise. Just set your compressor to taste while the noise gate is dis-engaged. Then, turn on the noise gate. If the gate starts chopping to abrubtly, increase the attack time a little to allow Smooooooooooooth compression while not bringing up a yard full of noise.......
