Members The Unknown
Hi ! As the official musician of my family, I got the task to shop for my guitar playing brother in law's christmas present. He'd like a device with great distortion sounds and basic effects so he could play with headphones. Guitar is a hobby for him, pro gear is not necessary. The device needs to be simple to operate, with knobs rather then digital menus. Any suggestions ?
Members cusackmusic
Roland Micro Cube? I know it's an amp, but they are little, easy to use, and great for beadroom playing!
Members Kace
How about one of those Kork Ampworks deals? Small, 3 or 4 knobs, reviews seemed decent,
Members johnrambo
A Roland Microcube or a VOX DA5 would be nice. If he only wants to play thru headphones you could get a zoom g1 for 60 bucks. The g1 would be a good introduction to amp and effect types for a beginner and you can play along with preset drum patterns.

Members blakeq
People seem to like the Zoom G2, the Yamaha Magicstomp II is also good.

My favorite at the moment is a Boss GT-8, which features plenty of knobs but also a digital LCD screen. It is pretty deep. The Tonelab is not as versatile, but it's pretty easy to operate. It has an LCD screen also, but it is primarily a knob-based device. It is straightforward and easy to use, and offers a variety of authentic-sounding amp tones. The Yamaha Magicstomp is also very nice, and they can be had relatively inexpensively. It's a bit difficult to configure without a computer however. The only current production unit that I know of that is wholly knob-based is the Boss ME-50. I have not personally used one, but, unfortunately, I have seen quite a few bad reviews of this machine. Members katintokyo
thecheck out this link to find out about the above GT-8 etc. this site is for the more expensive (i.e. above 200 dollars) stuff but worth a read. The amps above are really worth it in my opinion too, although im leaning for the VOX DA-
