But if y is cleaner than x, logic says the next step is z.

Here, ya go :thu:

A 12AX7 has 100% gain so all you can do from that point is lower your gain
=================================
12AX7 100% Gain
5751 70% Gain
12AT7 60% Gain
12AY7 45% Gain
12AV7 41% Gain
12AU7 19% Gain
********************************
12AX7 = ECC83, 7025, ECC803, E83CC, 6681
12AT7 = ECC81, 6201, 6679
12AY7 = 6072
12AV7 = 5965
12AU7 = ECC82, 5963, 5814, 6189
=================================

You are taking what I said way too seriously. My original post was joke.

Since a 12AY7 has less gain than a 12AX7, I jokingly stated that a (non existant) 12AZ7 would give a totally clean sound.

It was a joke. :wave:

Every person I know who has this particular amp has remarked on how well it cleans up with their guitars' volume. Says something.

You have to crank that amp to get distortion, though, the gain is tied to the volume knob. Most folks just max it, and then control things from their guitar.

Sounds good to me.

I am going to build a cab with a few different size speakers so I can play quiet or loud with the amp still at the same volume.

You'll probably want to replace the stock tubes anyway. Also worth looking into are the various mods for it. Stock, it has no standby switch, so if you're not willing to mod it (and thus void your warranty), get in the habit of setting the volume to 0 while you let it warm up.

Yeah, I know...I think what I posted is good to know if you own a tube amp, let's say its for the noobs. I was hip to ya in the 12AZ7 post :wave:
