"Distortion Dog": Little help for a DIY-modding project, please.

Here's a funny distortion pedal from Czech Republic, 'Distortion Dog'. My friend bought it over there about ten years ago and of course it sounds like crap. The on/off switch was broken and my friend gave it to me when we where cleaning out our old rehearsal space. I will fix the switch and I want to rehouse it in some funny fruit box or a toy car or something.

 

But here is the question;

any of you DIY-minded people here, if you look at the pics, can you recognize if it is a copy of some other pedal and can you give me any hints about whether and how I should try to mess with it? It sounds so bad that no matter what changes I could do to it would make it sound better.

 

And yes, I am also a total beginner in building pedals.
