It's good for idiots like me who can't be bothered with MIDI or step recording or any of that stuff (although it accommodates all of that and more). It has big pads on top for triggering various instruments or you can chain a few patterns and go. They're still affordable - around $120 - $150. They sound great and there are expansion cards for more drum sounds, 808, 909, Jazz Brush, etc. There's also an R-8 mkII which has many of the expansion card sounds in memory, but they're fetching $300+.
